The method · How the engine thinks

We built an SEO tool honest enough to audit its own maker. Then we let it.

Any agency will grade a client. We aimed our own SEO engine at agencyfix.com and let it grade us — unedited — then published what it caught. The story isn't the score. It's watching software flag four keyword-strategy mistakes that quietly cost agencies real revenue, and correct every one.

Most SEO tools grade the wrong thing. They check whether you used a keyword enough times, whether your title tag is the right length, whether your images have alt text — the mechanics. What almost none of them ask is the only question that decides whether a page ever earns a dollar: was this keyword worth targeting in the first place?

That question is exactly what we built our engine to answer. So we pointed it at our own site to prove it wasn't just marketing. It came back with four decisions a sharp human strategist could easily get wrong — and showed its work on each. Here they are.

Catch 1: the market that looked impossible was one word from wide open

Take HVAC. The obvious phrase to chase is hvac marketing agency — so most agencies build a page for it and move on. Our engine pulled the competitors actually ranking for it and measured what it would take to displace them. The verdict: don't. The top of that result is held by sites with a median of 8,257 referring domains. For a site our age, that's a wall.

But it didn't stop at "no." It checked the neighbors. hvac lead generation — same monthly demand, same customer, the same money on the other end — is led by pages with about 317 referring domains. Roughly a 26× easier climb for an identical buyer.

The mistake the tool prevents: writing off a whole market because its most obvious phrase is guarded. The demand was always reachable — through the door next to the one everyone lines up at.

Catch 2: a shorter phrase, more than double the traffic

In Spanish, the instinct is to target agencia de marketing digital — it reads like the complete, professional term. Our engine flagged it as out of reach for now and pointed one word over: agencia de marketing, which draws more than twice the monthly searches and scored as genuinely winnable.

agencia de marketing digital1,300Out of reach
agencia de marketing2,900Winnable

More demand, less resistance, one word away. A tool that only checks whether you "used the keyword" would have happily green-lit the harder, smaller term.

Catch 3: ten searches a month, and worth chasing anyway

Here's the catch that surprises people. answering service for towing companies gets roughly 10 searches a month. Every volume-first tool discards it on sight. Ours flagged it as worth a dedicated page — because it weighs commercial intent, not just raw volume, and each click on that term costs about $59 in Google Ads. Ten searches from people with a wallet open beats ten thousand from people killing time.

High-intent keywordSearches / moCost per click

answering service for plumbers480$283

A whole tier of high-value, low-volume niches is invisible to anyone sorting a spreadsheet by search count. The engine surfaces them because it reads intent and price, not just popularity.

Catch 4: and the trap in the other direction

The same logic works as a brake. Some keywords are easy to rank for precisely because no one searches them. The engine tags those dead terms so we never spend a page winning a race with no finish line.

"Winnable" and "worth winning" are two different tests. Passing one without the other is how effort quietly evaporates. The engine runs both, every time.

Why show you our own audit? Because the most honest proof that a tool works is the list of things it caught its own makers about to get wrong. Every decision above would sail through a conventional SEO plugin — they grade whether you used the keyword. None of them ask whether the keyword was worth the page. That gap is the whole point of what we built, and it's the same engine that runs on every site we take on.
